Derek Wolfe’s Hunting Story:

Derek heads to Oregon to hunt black bear in the fall with the Born and Raised Outdoors guys. After warming up with his bow in the pristine wilderness at camp, Derek and the crew take a look at the rugged terrain and make a plan for Day 1.

“It’s like a beautiful misery, you know?”

The fog settles into the landscape before morning light and the first hike out into the hunting grounds.

Day 1’s spots #1 and #2 show no sign of a black bear until one is spotted hiding behind the tip of a log, eventually working its way back into the brush. The guys head down a hill and set up an auto-call for a little experimentation, trekking toward spot #3 into the evening hours with no sign.

Day 2 comes with a lighter blanket of fog and even more serenity. Derek explains that springtime yields a higher number of bears in the clearings and open areas than in the fall. Scouting yields a little sign of bears in the blackberries, but the crew decides to head to a nearby range for a shooting lesson and to fire off some practice rounds with the Sig Sauer Rifle.

Evening brings another spot and heavy bear sign, as Derek spots a still black bear in the distance. The boys set up the gun for distance, Derek lines up, and with one crack, Derek drops his first rifle kill.

“I had to focus on every little thing…as he was moving, I was readjusting my hips with him. All that stuff from today – I wouldn’t have been able to make that shot.”
